Dementia: Catching the memory thief

It has been over a hundred years since Alzheimer’s disease was first described, and in that time we have learned much about the condition, but how close are we to having effective treatments and could one day we prevent dementia from even occurring?

Released on World Alzheimer’s Day, September 21, a short film by the University of Cambridge reflects back on the research that is helping us to understand alterations in the brain in dementia, and the ongoing search for potential new treatments.

The film features Dr John Skidmore, Chief Scientific Officer at the Cambridge Drug Discovery Institute, one of the three Institutes in the £30 million Alzheimer’s Research UK Drug Discovery Alliance. The Alliance is working to fast-track the development of new treatments for dementia, capitalising on new ideas and breakthroughs from academic research teams and driving them into the hands of dedicated biology and chemistry teams to design and develop potential new medicines against these targets.
